Mastercard – a difference you can feel
The insight that helped ensure payment cards were instantly recognisable.

At RNIB, we identified a growing challenge with payment cards; card issuers were opting for cards without embossed surfaces, making it particularly difficult for blind and visually impaired people to distinguish their cards from one another. While the simple solution of a curved notch was devised, many consumers still couldn’t differentiate between the multiple kinds of card products people carry in their wallets – credit, debit or prepaid.
Mastercard saw this as an opportunity to use consumer insights to uncover ways to make its business stronger and more inclusive.
Embracing this challenge, Mastercard worked with our experts to design a simple, inclusive solution; unique notches for each card type – square, half-circle and triangle. After refining prototypes with our guidance and additional consumer feedback, Mastercard launched the design, combining functionality with cost-effective manufacturing.
"The best and most sustainable solutions are simple, but not simplistic - just like these cards.”
